About this outing

Amsterdam did not ask permission first. The earliest spray-painted letters went up in the Jordaan and along the IJ waterfront in the 1970s, from a can that had been invented in 1949 to spray insecticide. This walk follows what happened next: the difference between a tag and a mural, why a stencil beats freehand when you have three minutes, what the two o'clock window means to a writer, and how building owners went from cease-and-desist letters to budgets. The city now spends millions a year painting over the same walls. Thirteen stops, with quizzes along the way.
